Centennial Greenway
Interstate 170 to Warson Park
DTLS is part of a team working with Great Rivers Greenway and the City of Olivette to develop a 2.5 mile segment of the Centennial Greenway, extending from Olive Boulevard and I-170 to Warson Park in Olivette. Upon completion of the project, the Centennial Greenway will extend from Shaw Park to Warson Park, connecting the cities of Clayton, Ladue, University City, and Olivette. This represents the central portion of a greenway which will eventually span over 20 miles, from Forest Park in St. Louis, into St. Charles County, connecting to Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park and the Katy Trail along the way.
The project area encompasses a diverse mix of land uses and stakeholders, including residents, merchants, and employers, as well as public and private agencies. Beginning in 2018, the design team worked with this group to identify a preferred greenway corridor, which includes a combination of city park land, street right-of-way, unused railroad, and portions of the River Des Peres floodplain.
The design of the greenway seeks to:
Connect people and places by reducing barriers and strengthening access to the places where people live, work, play, and learn.
Foster community and economic development by establishing a greenway with a strong identity and sense of place derived from a diversity of experiences and distinctive destinations.
Promote environmental stewardship by linking the Cityβs existing outdoor recreational resources, expanding and connecting wildlife corridors, improving the River Des Peres streambank, and creating opportunities for learning.
Optimize safety by maximizing visibility, prioritizing off-street routes, and positioning necessary crossings in a manner which protects greenway users.
The project is being developed in multiple stages, the first of which is currently under construction in Warson Park, in conjunction with the building of Olivetteβs new Community Center. Subsequent phases in Indian Meadows Park and at the I-170 interchange are anticipated to begin construction in 2023.
