Historic Downtown Revitalization

Wentzville, Missouri

The Historic Downtown Transportation Revitalization Study identified transportation-related projects and enhancements for downtown Wentzville, Missouri. These projects range from improved highway access and upgraded railroad crossings to reimagined streetscapes and new murals and gateways. Working within a multidisciplinary design team, DTLS focused on gateways, streetscape improvements, a multipurpose plaza space, opportunities for art, and landscape plantings.

With a wide variety of uses and constituents, the project required a thoughtful approach to public engagement. DTLS devised a custom charrette exercise to ensure the perspectives of downtown residents and business owners were captured in a meaningful way. The feedback collected during the charrette led directly to the conceptual design of new gateways, pocket parks, and streetscapes.

The outcome of this study was a priority list of projects, beginning with streetscape enhancements on Allen Street. The study also provided the city with the information needed in order to successfully secure federal transportation funds which led to the immediate start of the Allen Street streetscape design and construction project.

The redesigned Allen Street was completed in 2021 and features 8’ wide accessible sidewalks, rain gardens, planting areas, and pedestrian lighting. Pedestrian safety and comfort was a top priority on the north side of the street, so excessively wide driveways were narrowed to minimize crossing distances and corner bump-outs were installed at every street crossing. Angled parking was incorporated into the south side of the street and equipped with electrical hookups for festivals and future events.
