Rick Kacenski

Principal Emeritus, Advisor
Rick@dtls-studio.com

As a co-founder of DTLS, Rick has been instrumental in charting the course for our studio.  After a 40-year career in landscape architecture, Rick retired from DTLS in 2021.  However, he continues to offer his counsel and guidance when we need it, and frequently drops in on us during an afternoon walk in the neighborhood.  Rick has been a life-long champion of the virtues of native plants, leading the way in St. Louis for their adoption on projects of all types and scales.  He has passed on his appreciation and knowledge of indigenous plant communities, not only through daily professional mentorship, but also as a former Senior Lecturer for the Graduate Landscape Architecture Program at Washington University in St. Louis.  In 2006, the St. Louis Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects named Rick as the recipient of the Robert Goetz Award, an honor recognizing his career contributions to landscape architecture.  His work can be seen throughout St. Louis and far beyond, from playgrounds to university campuses, from public transit corridors to corporate headquarters, and from healthcare environments to public parks.  His influence will continue to be felt for decades by the generations of landscape architects and designers around the world, whom he has guided and inspired.  These days, Rick most enjoys working in his home landscape, walking, cycling, sketching, and nature photography.
